HARROW By Linnea Glatt

Combining concepts of time, motion and place, Harrow is an installation of many materials and elements. The motorized cone of Cor-Ten steel turns on a circular track, completing one revolution each 24 hours. As the cone turns, its bands travel through a bed of sand, forming concentric rings. The rotation of the cone symbolizes the cyclical nature of life and the balancing of life's events. Seats of Cor-Ten and wood are placed in informal groups amidst trees outside the circle of sand, creating a serene, contemplative environment.

STELE GATEWAY By Jesús Bautista Moroles

Recalling the ancient post-and-lintel portal form with hieroglyphic writing, Stele Gateway is made of Fredericksburg, Texas granite and functions both as a passageway to walk through and as a place to remain, sitting on the surrounding natural bench. The posts of the portal have the artist's writing in the patterns of squares cut into the stone. The messages are only visual, and they are meant to be a universal statement of civilizations coming together.

JOURNEY TO SIRIUS By George Smith

Inspired by the art and architecture of the traditional African society known as The Dogon in the West African Republic of Mali, Journey to Sirius incorporates two monumental welded steel structures addressing one another diagonally across a bed of black rock. The geometric surfaces interpret the natural geometry of the Bandiagara Cliffs of Mali, and the sculptural forms that cantilever from the structures represent spirit, as inspired by the cliff paintings and high relief carvings on the cliff dwellings of The Dogon.

STEEL WAVE By Tom Orr

Inspired by the simple, elegant designs found in Japanese art and architecture, sculptor Tom Orr created Steel Wave for the 1996 Sun & Star celebration of Japanese and American cultures. The sculpture was placed on loan to The Belo Foundation for the Sun & Star celebration, and following the loan period, the Foundation acquired the work for its permanent collection, which also includes three monumental sculptures in Lubben Plaza. The sculpture is formed of a single plate of steel, laser-cut to create the grid, and then curved to form the wave shape.
